Supporting Access to Justice in the East of England
The Eastern Legal Support Trust (ELST) is a grant-making charity, formed in 2010, to raise funds for free legal advice services in the East of England (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk). To see the stated Objects of ELST please see below.
The Trust works to enable the provision of free legal advice to members of the public who would otherwise be disadvantaged and also supports other charitable work that promotes access to justice.
The charities supported by the ELST help to facilitate access to justice for the poorest and most disadvantaged members of society. They provide free legal help to people facing problems such as homelessness, debt, employment, family issues, discrimination and injustice and they really need funds to support their work.
As part of a network of Legal Support Trusts, working with the Access to Justice Foundation, we support the provision of specialist legal advice through law centres, advice agencies and other free legal advice organisations. We do this by providing the organisations, on application, with grant funding. We raise money through fundraising events, including sponsored legal walks, and distribute the funds raised to those services in greatest need.
In common with its sister Legal Support Trusts, the ELST receives and distributes monies it receives from the Access to Justice Foundation, and also engages in its own fundraising activities. Already the Trust has received high levels of support and this was shown by the participation in Trust's inaugural fundraising event: a 10km sponsored legal walk held in Cambridge in May 2011, led by His Honour Judge Patrick Moloney QC, Designated Civil Judge for the East of England; and His Honour Judge David Mackie QC, designated Mercantile Judge for London & South East.
The Objects for which the ELST has been established:
1. The provision of financial and other support to persons or organisations that provide, organise or facilitate the provision of, legal advice or assistance (by way of representation or otherwise) in the East of England which is free of charge, including such financial support as is envisaged by section 194 of the Legal Services Act 2007 (as amended or re-enacted from time to time), directly or indirectly to people who are in need of such assistance by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage;
2. The promotion of such other purposes aimed at improving access to justice being exclusively charitable according to the law of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine; and
3. The promotion of such other purposes being exclusively charitable according to the law of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.
