Small Grants

The Eastern Legal Support Trust aims to deliver available funds in an effective manner to support the provision of pro bono legal services in the East of England.

We are currently accepting applications for grants.

Owing to the limited funds available, applications should be for grants in the region of £250 to £2,500. Larger applications, up to £5,000 will be considered but (in common with all applications), even if successful, may not be granted in full.

The objectives of the Trust can be found here and we suggest that you familiarise yourself with these before considering an application.

Funding is available to organisations (charitable bodies, registered charities [or those which have an application for registration pending], charitable companies limited by guarantee, and community interest companies) providing, or facilitating the provision of, free legal advice or assistance in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Preference will be given to activities that enable the provision of free legal advice to members of the public who would otherwise be disadvantaged, though other types of funding needs may be considered. Examples (for illustration only) include:

  • IT or other equipment that increases an organisation's proven capacity to undertake casework.
  • Help with feasibility or research work on a strategic social welfare legal issue covering a wider than local area.
  • Assistance to match fund other income streams that have been secured for legal advice work.
  • Help with staff training or organisational development that increases effectiveness.

The Trust will only fund not-for-profit activity and will not support projects where the Trustees consider that public funding is suitable and practical within a reasonable time frame.

Successful applications will be subject to a basic written agreement, including a requirement for reporting. We may request additional information or supporting material.

The application form is available below. Applications must be completed electronically and emailed to the Trust at enquiries@elst.org.uk.

We have two application deadlines annually:  31 August and 31 December.
